A large part of this is because I graduated from the Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, but also as an educator (Brown University from 1970 to 1975) as well as having observed the liberal arts programs first hand (Brown University) It is my belief that it is important to integrate education and studies in art along with other areas of study. It's not surprising that an ethnomusicologist who has a PhD and MA from UCLA is keen on the arts. The program in ethnomusicology that was my first in UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) sits comfortably in a department of music in the College of Letters and Science. It is fun to have diverse interests. It is also fun to see the big overall picture. Both undergraduates and graduate students (for whom I wrote three texts - Music in India, The Classical Traditions of India, Thinking Musically: Music in Japan - Experiencing Music - Expressing Cultural Expression) enjoy my teaching. Also, I rotate periods during which I engage in mainly academic pursuits along with times when I incorporate administrative work to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98, Chair of the Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-98, Chair of the Group of Asian Studies in 1999, and now Chair of the Department of Music again).
